Backcountry Hunts has been running guided hunts since 1984. Steve Jones, the outfitter, is a life member of the National Rifle Association and former southeast director of the New Mexico Council of Outfitters and Guides—credentials that matter when booking a multi-day hunt.
Most hunts take place on private ranches leased specifically for the season. They operate across New Mexico and Texas, giving hunters options depending on timing and game preference.
New Mexico Elk (Unit 34) - Their specialty. Four seasons available: - Bow hunt: September 18-24 - Youth hunt: October 6-10 - Muzzleloader hunt: October 13-17 - Rifle hunt: October 20-24 - Rate: $4,150 when you draw a permit - Lodging in Cloudcroft, 3-hour drive from El Paso
Unit 34 is emphasized for high-quality mature bulls
Northern New Mexico Antelope Hunt - September 1-4, teepee camp near Clayton, NM. Average score mid-70s (13½–15½ inches). $2,700 plus tax and license. Fly into Amarillo, 2.5-hour drive to camp.
Axis Deer Hunt - Mid-May to early June when animals are in the roar. $3,500 includes meals, lodging, guides. No trophy fee. Fly into San Antonio.
Additional Game - Aoudad, mule deer, whitetail, turkey, javelina, bear, mountain lion, and exotics available.
Typical packages include meals, lodging, guides, and bedding. They handle the draw application process for New Mexico elk permits and maintain landowner permits for hunters who don't draw. Signed contracts required for permit pool entry by March 21 deadline.
