BMD Armed Security operates a training academy in Syracuse focused on firearms instruction and security guard certification. The 18-hour course covers 9 hours of classroom instruction on Day 1 and 7 hours classroom plus 2 hours of range time on Day 2. This is a multi-state permit course with refreshments provided. Registration required 5 days before start date.
The 47-hour course is New York State's first step toward armed guard registration. It includes 7 hours on NYS Penal Law Article 35 (Use of Force/Deadly Physical Force) and 40 hours of range instruction and qualification. Students must qualify with 175 points minimum out of 250, shooting at 3, 7, 15, and 25-yard distances. Most shooting drills are timed.
Requirements: Valid pistol license, valid NYS security guard registration card, Level 2+ holster, minimum 3 magazines, and 600 rounds of ammunition.
Annual armed recertification (8 hours) and unarmed recertification (8 hours, required yearly for all NY security officers) keep credentials current. On-the-job training (16 hours) is required within 90 days of employment.
Courses book online through their website. Full refund available prior to course start; 85% refund available for the 47-hour course if cancellation occurs after deadly physical force training but before firearms handling instruction begins.
