Pitch Pine Outfitters opened May 18, 2024, at 2809 Route 44/55 in Gardiner—a deliberate location for anyone heading to Minnewaska State Park, the Mohonk Preserve, and beyond. The shop occupies the former BaseCamp Gunks location, which had already been renovated into a welcoming space.
The store feels like a cozy cabin with wood-paneled walls. The core inventory focuses on hiking, camping, and outdoor recreation:
"Our core is outdoor, but it's fun to see people surprised by what we have here." — Brett Concors, co-owner
Brett and Bronwen Concors met through their families—their mothers taught together and both families were hiking and camping enthusiasts. Brett represents the fourth generation of his family's business, Thruway Sporting Goods, a Hudson Valley mainstay. They spent nearly a decade envisioning this shop before finding the Gardiner location in October 2023.
The couple approach retail with intentionality. They stock only brands they personally use or that come highly recommended. "We have to believe in the stuff we sell," Brett says. Their mission: high quality at multiple price points.
Outdoor Convenience Store — Brett and Bronwen position Pitch Pine as what locals need and what tourists want to discover: a focused selection without the overwhelming size of big-box retailers.
The shop sits on two acres with picnic tables and a fire pit. They're building an event schedule that could include backpacking workshops, yoga sessions, beer tastings, and chili cookoffs.
Pitch pine trees grow throughout the Hudson Valley, most notably along the Shawangunk Ridge crest visible from the shop. These trees thrive in harsh conditions unsuitable for other species—resilient, scrappy, and symbolic of the region.
