GunBlack isn't a gun store. They're a metal finishing shop that's been refurbishing firearms the way the original manufacturers do it since the Kempf Family founded the company in 1987. Located in Interlaken, New York—in the Finger Lakes region between Rochester, Syracuse, Binghamton, and Albany—GunBlack supplies the same hot bluing and parkerizing processes to Remington, Marlin, FN, Ruger, H&R 1871, and the Department of Defense that they offer to individual gun owners.
GunBlack's hot blue process mirrors what original equipment manufacturers use. The steel gets prepped to remove scratches, light rust, and blemishes before the bluing is applied. Every step is checked and rechecked by technicians throughout the process. They process Black Oxide on steel up to 16 feet long and handle an average of 15,000 pounds of finished product daily.
Black Oxide is a chemical conversion coating that penetrates 2-3 millionths of an inch into steel surfaces—ideal for machined parts with close tolerances.
Special expertise: GunBlack solved the Post-64 Winchester problem. Winchester Model 94 receivers made after 1964 can't be reblued with traditional Black Oxide salts without turning plum purple. GunBlack formulated a procedure that delivers a deep, rich black finish without removing the barrel or using harsh pickling acids.
Barrels requiring a matte parkerized finish get stripped and bead blasted to create a uniform, non-reflective, medium dark gray finish. This is the standard for military ordinance and law enforcement because it delivers superior corrosion resistance and lubricity.
Manganese Phosphate adds 0.0002 to 0.0003 inches to steel and cast surfaces. The process works on mild steel, steel alloys, heat treated steels, cast iron, and malleable iron castings. GunBlack's 8-foot parkerizing tanks handle long heavy barrels without issue.
GunBlack has gunsmithing capabilities for repair work on all makes and models. They specialize in custom restoration of antiques and collectibles—heirlooms that get handed down from grandparents to grandchildren. They've restored everything from hunting rifles to military artillery.
Specialty Projects: GunBlack restored a 75mm Howitzer cannon for a VFW post in Louisiana, sand blasting and parkerizing the barrel, breach, and components back to original ordinance specifications. The cannon now stands on display for ceremonial firing.
