Full description and what we offer
The New Hanover County Sheriff's Office processes concealed handgun carry permits through a streamlined online system. You can apply for new permits, renewals, duplicates, or address changes directly through their website without visiting in person for the initial application.
For New Applicants: - Be a U.S. citizen or naturalized citizen - Age 21 or older - At least 30 days residency in New Hanover County - Valid NC driver's license with current address - Completion of a firearms training course approved by the NC Criminal Justice Standards Commission - Pass a criminal background check
For Renewals: - Apply between 90 days prior and your expiration date - Submit prior to expiration to avoid reapplication penalties
If your permit expired less than 60 days ago, you can renew without retaking the training course. Expired more than 60 days? You'll need new training and must apply as a new applicant.
| Service | Cost | Timeline |
|---|---|---|
| New CHP | $90 | 45 days from complete application |
| Renewal | $75 | 45 days from complete application |
| Fingerprinting | Included | Part of new permit fee |
Applications are processed Monday-Thursday, 9am-3pm. The sheriff's office requires appointments to be scheduled online with payment to reserve your slot. Processing times can extend multiple weeks due to mandatory background checks and mental health record verification.
If you're active or retired law enforcement with a qualification score from the last 12 months, you can skip the civilian training requirement. Bring your qualification scores, a letter from your superior confirming no disciplinary action, and your law enforcement ID badge.
NC General Statute 14-315.1 covers firearm storage requirements if minors live on your premises. You must store firearms so unsupervised minors cannot access them, unless they're under lawful parental supervision or you're carrying on your person.
Make sure you have your NC driver's license number and firearms training certificate number ready before starting your online application.
