Youth Programs - Polk County Gun Club

Polk County Gun Club operates on approximately 90 acres of land adjacent to Little Mountain Road (SR 1522), about 4 miles south of Columbus, NC. It's a private, incorporated non-profit club run entirely by members who volunteer to maintain facilities and manage operations. The club owns all its property outright with zero debt.

Members have access to:

• •3 Combination Skeet/Trap Ranges – Open trap on Mondays and Thursdays, open skeet on Tuesdays and Fridays. Saturdays usually see both in progress on separate ranges.
• •Rifle Ranges – 300, 200, 100, and 50 yard distances for precision shooting
• •25 Yard Pistol Range – Cold range operation with strict safety protocols
• •Archery Range – Separate facility for bow shooters

Guests can shoot with members on skeet and trap ranges during open hours, but rifle and pistol ranges require an accompanying club member.

Polk County Gun Club holds:

• •NSSA-registered skeet shoots
• •ATA-registered trap shoots
• •CMP High-Power matches
• •NRA High-Power competitions
• •Rimfire competitions

The club maintains 100% affiliation with the National Rifle Association and also partners with the National Skeet Shooting Association, American Trap Shooting Association, Civilian Marksmanship Program, and NC Rifle and Pistol Association.

Polk County Gun Club runs an active junior program with:

• •Marksmanship training
• •Safety instruction
• •Multiple competition teams for young shooters

The club also makes facilities available to regional law enforcement agencies for training purposes and maintains a strong community involvement presence.

Membership is granted by unanimous Board approval and requires:

• •U.S. citizenship, age 18+
• •Two voting member sponsors who know you well
• •Active NRA membership (required at application and throughout membership)
• •Background check
• •Attendance at two club meetings with sponsor interview
• •Completion of Range Safety Officer (RSO) training before unsupervised range use
• •Family memberships include spouse, children up to age 19 (or 26 if student/military), and grandchildren

Every member is trained as a Range Safety Officer with the obligation to intervene if unsafe activity occurs. Core safety rules:

• •No projectiles leave the property – All rounds must stop on club berms
• •Cold range procedures with grounded firearms, magazines out, actions open, and Empty Chamber Indicators inserted during cease fires
• •Hearing and eye protection required
• •No loaded firearms except on the firing line
• •Strict muzzle discipline when moving weapons
• •Members clean their positions and police cartridge cases after use

The club recently installed an electronic gate accessible only to members with active ID cards. Drop-in visits and open public shooting are no longer available.
