Full description and what we offer
Dirty Bird Outfitters hunts the waterfowl migration across North America—starting in Arkansas each February through early March, then moving to North Dakota from April through May. Owner-operator Matthew Piehl and lead guide Nick Marcyes have spent decades pursuing birds from Saskatchewan to Mexico, and they've built their operation around one core principle: treat every hunt like it's your own.
Dirty Bird focuses on dry field duck and goose hunts over high-quality full-body decoys and windsocks. You'll hunt with top-tier equipment and guides who live for this work. Their approach emphasizes heavy preseason scouting, identifying roosting patterns and flyways, then positioning hunts to give you the best conditions Mother Nature allows.
What's included: - Expert guides with intimate knowledge of local terrain - Premium blinds and layout boats - Pre-hunt briefings and post-hunt meals - Transportation and field logistics - Open Country Lodge accommodations (up to 16 people)
| Hunt Type | Season | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Duck & Goose Combo | Fall & Spring | The core hunt—multiple species in prairie terrain |
| Giant Canada Goose | Fall & Spring | Targeting the big birds |
| Tundra Swan | Fall | Rare opportunity during migration |
| Snow Goose | Spring | High-action migration season |
Spring snow goose hunting in Arkansas is where the action peaks. Migrating geese stop over in the lush marshes and farmlands, creating conditions that Dirty Bird's Arkansas experience takes full advantage of. Their spring season has produced 200-bird days and consistently puts hunters on heavy numbers.
Matthew Piehl, the owner, was born and raised in North Dakota and hunts waterfowl year-round. He also owns The Shooting Park in Horace, ND. Nick Marcyes has a degree in fisheries and wildlife management and spends 10 months per year in the field chasing the migration with Dirty Bird. Both are obsessed with waterfowl hunting—not just the kill, but the tradition and camaraderie.
Customer reviews speak to the results: "They had us on the birds and making piles." "Our guides put us on the snows...and a lot of snows at that!" "Very professional and worked hard at getting a 200 bird day!"
Dirty Bird partners with Open Country Lodge for comfortable accommodations that sleep up to 16 people. The lodge includes: - Well-equipped kitchen for self-catering - Pool table for evening entertainment - Outdoor patio and firepit - The "binzebo"—a cozy gazebo made from a repurposed grain bin - Farm-to-table meals available - Rustic charm with modern conveniences
Dirty Bird accommodates all levels—seasoned pros and first-time waterfowlers. They run individual hunts, family groups, and corporate packages. The mission is simple: show more people how fun waterfowl hunting really is.
"We hunt waterfowl because this is a way of life and tradition that has been handed down from our fathers and their fathers before. This is what we know. This is what we love. This is what we do."
