High Brass Gundog Kennels operates from Newark, Ohio, about 30 miles east of Columbus. Terry and Jill Gough run the operation with a focus on turning hunting dogs into what they call "brag dogs" — animals ready for field work or AKC hunt test competition.
They offer three structured programs:
- •Puppy Program covers socialization with young dogs, bird introduction (making them "bird crazy"), proper retrieves, gun introduction with birds, basic obedience (name, here, heel, kennel), and keeping training fun throughout.
- •Intermediate Program steps up to bird re-introduction, directional commands (name and here), proper retrieve to hand, heel, whoa commands (without and with birds), staunchness to wing, steadiness to shot and fall, water retrieves with fresh shot birds, and kennel loading.
- •Advanced Program demands extreme obedience and staunchness, advanced whoa training, steady to wing/shot/fall, retrieve to hand at heal side, water retrieve to hand, kennel and leave-it commands. This level produces hunt-test-ready dogs.
