Full description and what we offer
Oregon CHL Training has been providing firearms safety instruction since 1998. The NRA-certified instructor operates primarily in Yamhill County and surrounding areas (Tigard, Beaverton, Hillsboro, Portland, Wilsonville, McMinnville), with training available at any location within reasonable distance from Newberg.
In-Person Classes ($35) Most effective for anyone unfamiliar with firearms or needing more than a refresher. Classes are conducted at a mutually convenient location—typically your home. Instruction focuses on listening with encouraged questions. Small hands-on demonstrations of different firearms types are included, but no live-fire during the course. For larger groups with suitable facilities, group pricing can be negotiated.
Online Courses ($15, or $10 for those needing financial assistance) On-demand, self-paced training that satisfies Oregon's legal requirements if you're already familiar with firearms and the responsibilities of concealed carry. No waiting for scheduled class times—start whenever you're ready.
Zoom Classes Offered as an alternative to in-person instruction. These video sessions proved surprisingly effective during COVID restrictions and continue as a middle-ground option between full in-person and completely self-paced online training.
The course presents a clear picture of the responsibilities that come with carrying a firearm for self-defense. The goal isn't just to check a box—it's to help people decide if concealed carry is actually right for them before they invest time and money acquiring a firearm and the permit itself.
Firearms safety training is never wasted. Even if you complete the course and decide carrying isn't for you, the knowledge stays with you.
Unlike many online instructors, there are no hidden fees. Prices are as advertised—no extra charges for issuing certificates. If cost is a genuine barrier, the instructor works with students on payment arrangements, up to and including significant discounts.
Oregon law requires basic handgun safety training for CHL issuance. If you already have documentation from:
...that may satisfy the requirement. The course helps clarify whether you need additional certification.
Oregon allows concealed handgun licenses for residents of adjacent states (Washington, Idaho, Nevada, California). Note: these are discretionary rather than "shall issue," varying by county sheriff. The good news is non-residents can apply to any Oregon county sheriff of their choice.
Each certificate includes a secure QR code with encrypted validation information. This prevents fraud and allows law enforcement or third parties to verify exactly who the certificate was issued to and when.
Over 8,286 students trained since 1998. The database-driven system means lost certificates can be replaced instantly—no searching through old files.
