Full description and what we offer
University Rifle Club has been a fixture in the Reading, Pennsylvania shooting community for over a century. This is a private membership club dedicated exclusively to shooting sports—no bar, no restaurant, no social distractions. Just ranges and shooters who want to actually use them.
Members have access to the range 7 days a week during general hours (7 AM to sunset Monday-Saturday, 9 AM to sunset Sunday). The club also opens 24/7 for special events, including night shoots.
The facility sits on 17 acres with four distinct ranges:
| Range Type | Distances | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Rifle Range | 100, 200, 250, 300, 350 yards | Bench rests available for sight-in and testing |
| Extended Range | 10-400 yards | Full distance options |
| Small-Bore (.22) | 50 and 100 yards | Dedicated .22 range |
| Tactical Range | Variable | One range allows movement; three are static |
Bench rests are available if you're working on load development, testing ammo, or sighting in a new rifle. You can also participate in club matches throughout the year—check their calendar for upcoming events.
This isn't a walk-in range. You must join, and the club is selective about who they bring in. Their reasoning: they need members who will add value and help maintain the facility for the next 100 years.
Joining costs vary by time of year: - January-June & September-December: $350 initiation + dues - July-August: $300 (discounted rate) - All fees due at orientation
Associate and Junior members can upgrade to Senior membership after 1 year without paying the initiation fee again.
University Rifle Club operates as a 100% member-managed organization. There's no staff running the day-to-day—it's the members themselves. They hold monthly meetings on the second Thursday of each month to make decisions about how the club operates. The club elects a 7-person board each year: President, Vice President, Secretary, Treasurer, Membership Director, Executive Officer, and Assistant Executive Officer.
This means the club's future depends on member participation and skill. If you're handy and want to help maintain grounds or enhance facilities, they're looking for that.
