Woodcock Hill specializes in what separates a gun that fits from one that merely functions. Stock bending ($200) adjusts cast for proper shotgun fit—the kind of work that actually improves your shooting outcomes. Stock shortening ($150) gets the measurements right and adds a quality recoil pad. They'll often complete stock modifications overnight if you attend one of their shooting schools or try-gun fitting sessions.
Stock refinishing ($350 shotgun / $425 rifle) strips old finishes and applies hand-rubbed oil. Forend modifications, chequering re-cut, and pistol grip conversions to English-style straight hands are all handled in-house.
Barrel work includes: - Choke adjustments ($100-140 per barrel depending on lining) - Forcing cone lengthening ($55-100 per barrel) - Chamber lengthening ($65 per barrel)—great for older L.C. Smith, Fox, or Parker shotguns that need to handle modern cartridges - Sight bead replacement ($50+) - Blacking/cold rust bluing ($400+) - Crown rifle barrels ($75) and glass bedding ($145) for accuracy improvements
They also do hand lap rifle barrels, custom bolt jeweling ($125 bolt, $40 for bolt follower), and case color hardening ($400+) using old-world techniques combined with modern equipment.
Woodcock Hill is specially trained in England to manufacture and fit London-style pigskin leather-covered recoil pads—the gold standard in shotgun work.
Options include: - Kick-EEZ recoil pads (starting at $125, professionally installed) - Leather-covered pigskin pads ($355, made to order) - Original English Silvers pads (orange or dark shade, $75-165 installed) - Slip-over Sorbothane system ($45) for guns where you don't want permanent modifications
