Rhode Island doesn't require firearms training for a carry permit, but you do need to pass a live fire qualification with a certified instructor. This is where they come in.

You'll shoot 30 rounds at an Army-L target from 25 yards. Each shot scores up to 10 points for a 300-point maximum. You need 195 to pass.

  • Important: The caliber you qualify with determines your permit limit. Qualify with 9mm, your permit covers 9mm and smaller. Qualify with .45 ACP, you can carry anything up to that.
  • Qualification examination and live fire
  • Instructor endorsement (if you pass)
  • Rhode Island CCW application
  • Document copying and certification
  • Notarization of application
  • Oath administration

Two forms of ID from: valid driver's license, state ID, birth certificate, or US passport.

You can use your own handgun and ammunition, or they provide a Glock 19 (9mm) or Glock 30 (.45 ACP)—just bring the appropriate ammo.
