Charleston Self Defense Academy

Charleston Self Defense Academy operates from two facilities serving the greater Charleston area: North Charleston (7400 Rivers Avenue, Suite R, near I-26) and West Ashley (2467 Savannah Highway). The academy was founded by a husband-and-wife team with 25 years of combined experience in high-level judo, karate, and jiu-jitsu, with the goal of making quality martial arts training accessible to everyone.

• •Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu & Judo - Kids ages 7+, teens, and adults at both locations
• •Boxing - West Ashley and appointment-based at Northwoods Mall
• •Karate (Isshinryu) - Adults-only and all-ages classes
• •Traditional Aikido - Adults only, multiple weekly sessions
• •Filipino Martial Arts - Adults-only evening and weekend instruction
• •Little Dragons Program - Ages 5-7 foundation classes

Classes meet throughout the week with morning, evening, and weekend options. Availability varies by location and discipline.

The academy splits focus between traditional martial arts (emphasizing discipline, meditation, and self-respect) and modern combat sports (preparing students for competition). All programs include applicable self-defense skills with practical applications—not just drilling techniques in isolation.

Beyond fighting ability, they structure training around mental development: stress management, emotional regulation, goal-setting, and building the kind of confidence that carries into parenting, business, and teamwork.

Age-appropriate instruction designed to build core athletic and agility skills in an environment that fosters self-discipline and respect. Options include after-school classes, evening sessions, and summer camps.
