Full description and what we offer
The Columbia Police Department offers free firearm classes to adults who are legally eligible to own firearms. No hidden fees—the entire course, including classroom and range instruction, costs nothing.
Each monthly class combines two certifications: - NRA Basic Pistol instruction - South Carolina Concealed Weapon Permit training
Attendance at all sessions during the week your class is scheduled is required for completion.
Classes run one week per month at 1511 Taylor Street, Columbia:
| Session | Time |
|---|---|
| Tuesday evening | 6:30 p.m. – 9:30 p.m. |
| Thursday evening | 6:30 p.m. – 9:30 p.m. |
| Saturday | 8:00 a.m. until completion |
You'll need a double-action-only pistol chambered in: - 9mm (Para, Luger, 9X19) - .38 Special or larger
Your pistol must come with an instructor-approved outside-the-waistband (OWB) holster made of leather, Kydex, or molded plastic. The instructor approves your gun/holster combo on Tuesday before the Saturday range session.
The department offers a separate series designed specifically for women, creating a woman-friendly learning environment.
Free instruction. Real credentials. You get NRA-certified Basic Pistol training and meet South Carolina's concealed weapon permit requirements—no cost.
