USA Firearms Training operates under a simple philosophy: everyone has the right to defend themselves and others. The instruction comes from John, a 6th generation law enforcement officer with four decades of firearms training experience and extensive credentials that speak for themselves.
This isn't theoretical classroom instruction. John's teaching method emphasizes what you should know, not just what you have to know. He stresses proper terminology ("firearm," not "weapon"), safety first, and building muscle memory the right way from day one. His core principle: "slow is smooth and smooth is fast." Practice the technique correctly from the start, because perfect practice makes perfect—bad practice just creates bad habits that take twice as long to fix.
"The ability to transfer knowledge to a student is one of the biggest components of being an instructor. You need to know the material, but that in itself does not make an instructor."
John holds credentials including:
| Course | Details | Price |
|---|---|---|
| Concealed Weapons Permit (CWP) | State-required instruction covering legal requirements, safety, and proficiency | Contact for pricing |
| Advanced Tactical Instruction | Moving with firearm (forward, backward, lateral), draw and holster techniques, tactical reloading, malfunction clearing, barricade shooting, multiple target engagement, failure-to-stop scenarios | $200 |
| Private Instruction | One-on-one or two-person sessions focusing on grip, stance, sight alignment, malfunction clearing, or specific skill gaps | $85/2 hours (or $75 per person for pairs) |
All firearms classes exceed South Carolina's CWP training requirements.
Classes are kept small intentionally. John asks questions, solicits student input, and remains calm throughout. He teaches with respect and confidence—which instills confidence in students and lowers stress so people actually absorb the material. You won't get rushed through curriculum; instead, you get instruction that matches your learning style and goals.
Observation: Many people claim instructor credentials without backing them up. John's 40 years of hands-on experience and verifiable law enforcement/military background set him apart from instructors who only read from a manual.
Based in South Carolina. USA Firearms maintains a partnership with Little River Gun Shop on Sea Mountain Highway in Little River, SC—mention USA Firearms Training there and receive a 10% discount. The shop also works with Palmetto Custom Engraving.
Just because someone has permission to teach doesn't mean they have the experience or knowledge to do it well. When evaluating any firearms instructor, consider their safety record, real-world background, teaching experience, specialty areas, comfort level with students, and credentials. John's combination of law enforcement experience, extensive certifications, and four decades in the field checks every box.
Every class emphasizes the fundamentals of firearm safety and the legal responsibilities of carrying and using a firearm in South Carolina. Students leave confident, proficient, and knowledgeable about both their firearm and the laws governing its use.
