Rise Above Self-Defense

Rise Above Self-Defense has been serving the San Gabriel Valley and Los Angeles County since 2018. The operation is built on the personal story of its founder—a U.S. Navy veteran who worked as a Gunner's-mate on the USS Mt. Hood during Operation Desert Storm, maintaining and operating firearms and explosives aboard ship. That background translates directly into instruction.

Firearm Training: - Handgun Fundamentals — A welcoming multi-layer course for complete beginners through intermediate shooters. Covers basic pistol, universal safety, handgun types, ammunition, and marksmanship. Available as hybrid (Zoom lecture + in-person range work at La Puente Firing Range) or full one-day classes. - Defensive Handgun — Prerequisite: Handgun Fundamentals. Introduces defensive applications in real-life scenarios, mindset, shooting from cover, malfunction clearance, drawing techniques, single-handed fire, multiple targets, and movement tactics.

Self-Defense & Tactical: - Unarmed Combat Fundamentals (stances, striking, ground work) - Live Resistance Training (applying skills at real-world intensity) - One Person Room Clearing for Homeowners - Situational Awareness training

The founder is an NRA-certified firearm instructor and current Krav Maga blackbelt working toward 2nd degree. He brings experience in karate, boxing, Tae Kwon Do, Muay Thai, and BJJ. His personal transformation—losing 40 pounds, beating depression, and building confidence through martial arts and fitness—informs how he teaches.
