Full description and what we offer
Bucksnag Hunting Club was founded by Jimmy Reel, Bill Lehrer, and Bob Raley—three men with a deep passion for migratory waterfowl hunting and conservation. What started as a shared vision has grown into one of the region's most respected private hunting clubs, operating continuously for over 50 years with many charter members still active.
The club operates from the historic Chapman Hotel, originally built in 1910 as the Field Hotel during Garwood's rice-shipping boom. After extensive restoration in 1968, it became Bucksnag headquarters. The property features:
The restored hotel maintains its original character while providing modern comfort—members frequently stay for multi-day hunting trips with family and guests.
"The Bucksnag Tradition" centers on three pillars: a comfortable clubhouse, hearty country-style meals served daily, and access to some of the best duck and goose hunting in the country.
Location matters: Situated near Eagle Lake in the Garwood Prairie, Bucksnag has access to prime rice-land hunting areas leased from the original Lehrer family holdings. The surrounding landscape—with its waterfowl roosting areas maintained through generations—provides exceptional hunting conditions.
Conservation legacy: Jimmy Reel pioneered the Texas Rag Spread (white rag decoys for geese) in the 1940s and established the tradition of pumping water to create safe roosting areas for migrating ducks and geese. These conservation practices continue today.
Location: 507 Arthur Street, Garwood, TX 77442 (directly across from the post office, about 90 miles west/southwest of Houston)
Bucksnag operates from a building with deep Texas roots. The Field Hotel earned a reputation for Mrs. Field's excellent meals—travelers in the area would time their visits to eat there. That hospitality tradition carries forward today through daily prepared meals for members and their guests.
