Full description and what we offer
Handgun Academy of Texas handles everything from basic handgun certification to professional security credentials. All classes are taught by NRA and DPS-certified instructors—the lead instructor Blake has over 20 years in the firearms industry and is among the highest-reviewed instructors in Texas.
The required course for your Texas handgun permit. Includes 4-6 hours of classroom instruction covering carry laws, self-defense law, safe storage, and basic safety. Then you shoot a 50-round qualification.
Cost: $95 per person (class, range fees, paperwork included)
What to bring: Valid ID, handgun, 50 rounds of ammunition. If you don't have a gun, they rent one with ammo for $30. Safety glasses and ear protection are $5.
Schedule: 6 days a week, or schedule private classes anytime for families and groups. The Freedom Special runs $150 for 2 people.
A 2-hour introduction covering gun safety and shooting fundamentals. Classroom work, then range drills on grip, sight alignment, and handling. Emphasis on skill under stress—the gun itself doesn't protect you; your ability to use it does.
Cost: $100, plus 50 rounds of ammunition
Texas DPS-required training for private security work. Online self-study with instructor support. Covers industry laws, report writing, emergency response, conflict resolution, Texas Penal Code, and observation skills.
Cost: $45
In-person, hands-on training only. No online instruction—they believe that doesn't prepare you for real situations.
45-hour course taught weekly, starting any day but requiring 6 days completion. Covers use of force, defensive tactics, firearms qualification, baton and pepper spray theory, crime scenes, and awareness.
Cost: $200 (includes range fees)
Firearms requirement: .38 or larger minimum (9mm semi-auto recommended). Bring your own gun and 50 rounds, or rent one for $50. Shotgun qualification optional with extra range fees. Important: qualify with a revolver and you can only carry a revolver on duty; qualify with semi-auto and you can carry either.
The bodyguard certification—15 hours covering dignitary protection, executive protection, celebrity protection protocols, use of force, the force continuum, and tactical response. Offered monthly, 8:30 AM to 3:30 PM.
Cost: $200
Requirements: Must be 21, have or be applying for Level 3 commission, employed or seeking employment with a security company. State-required psychological evaluation discussed during class.
