GunClassUtah teaches Utah concealed carry permit courses that go beyond state minimums. Instructor Phil Snyder, a retired law enforcement officer and certified Utah LTC instructor, requires students to shoot a mandatory 50-round qualification course—Utah doesn't require it, but GunClassUtah does it anyway to ensure you're actually safe and proficient with your handgun.
Classes run at Lee Kay Shooting Center (6000 W 2100 S, Salt Lake City) and combine classroom instruction with range time:
Morning Classroom - Utah firearm and concealed carry laws - Reciprocity and interstate carry rights - Use of force and self-defense law - Safe storage and handling fundamentals - Responsible carry in public and private settings
Afternoon Range Qualification - 50-round course of fire at 3, 7, and 15 yards - Timed stages with scoring - Minimum 175 out of 250 points (70%) required to pass - One-on-one guidance for beginners and experienced shooters alike
Before you leave class, GunClassUtah handles: - Training certificate issuance - Fingerprinting services - Official permit application photos - Application submission assistance
You walk out ready to apply for your Utah CCW permit.
Handgun rentals available for $25 if you don't have your own. GunClassUtah stocks common concealed carry models.
- •Semi-automatic handgun or revolver (.22 caliber or higher)
- •Two magazines or speedloaders minimum
- •Covered-trigger holster
- •Long pants with belt loops and sturdy gun belt
- •Hat, water, snacks
- •Weather-appropriate clothing (outdoor range, can be windy)
- •Class Size: Limited to two shooters on the range at a time for safety.
- •Experience Level: Beginner to advanced. New shooters are welcome—instructors provide hands-on support.
