Full description and what we offer
DNR Gun Range is a public outdoor shooting facility located at 1994 Airport Road in Sutton, West Virginia, directly across from Braxton County Airport on State Route 15. The range operates from sunrise to sunset and requires no membership or advance registration.
The facility features eight covered shooting benches that provide weather protection while you work. The range is designed with four different backstop distances, with a maximum range of 175 yards, making it suitable for rifle shooting at intermediate to extended distances.
Covered benches mean you can shoot in light rain without packing up. The four backstop options let you adjust your distance based on what you're doing—whether it's zeroing, load development, or long-range practice.
The range's position near the county airport on a main state highway makes it straightforward to find and access without navigating back roads.
DNR Gun Range serves Braxton County residents, hunters preparing for season, rifle shooters doing load development work, and anyone sighting in firearms before hunting or competition. The covered benches and multiple distance options make it practical for both casual shooting and more serious precision work.
This is an outdoor facility, so bring targets, ammunition, shooting supplies, and weather-appropriate gear. There's no FFL services, gunsmith work, or retail operations on-site—it's a range-only facility.
DNR Gun Range is managed by West Virginia's Department of Natural Resources as a public shooting resource for the county.
The range fits into Braxton County's outdoor recreation ecosystem alongside the Burnsville Lake Wildlife Management Area, river floats on local waterways, and hunting opportunities throughout the county. For visitors and locals planning a shooting day, the range's reliable infrastructure and covered positions make it a reliable option in central West Virginia.
