Central Alabama Gun Club

Central Alabama Gun Club runs a members-only range facility near Shorter, Alabama, roughly 14 miles east of Montgomery. While membership is required for general range access, the club opens its doors to the public for all scheduled matches and competitions—meaning new shooters and visiting competitors are always welcome.

The range sits on substantial grounds with serious infrastructure:

• •14 pistol bays for handgun practice and competition
• •100 & 300 yard rifle ranges for distance shooting
• •Falling plate pistol bay for dynamic pistol work
• •Two rimfire steel bays (one rimfire, one pistol caliber)
• •Archery range with dedicated setup
• •Shotgun pavilion (machines on order)
• •Air-conditioned clubhouse and 6 restrooms (M&F)

Central Alabama hosts four main competitive shooting sports series:

United States Practical Shooting Association matches run monthly with setup starting Saturday at 8:00 AM. Sunday operations: - Target hanging begins at 8:00 AM - Sign-in opens at 8:00 AM, closes at 9:30 AM - Shooter's meeting at 9:45 AM - Match starts at 10:00 AM (Central Time)

• •Cost: $20 per match | Free if you help set up Saturday

USPSA offers 8 divisions: Single Stack, Open, Limited, Limited Optics, Limited-10, Production, Revolver, and Pistol Caliber Carbine. Walk-ons welcome. Matches include classifiers and are sanctioned by Practical Shooters of Central Alabama (PSOCA).

Fast-paced, spectator-friendly matches that emphasize speed over everything else. Perfect for introducing new shooters—you can compete with rimfire pistols or rifles.

• •Cost: $20 per shooter
• •Setup: Friday at 3:00 PM CT (volunteers shoot free)
• •Match Day: Second Saturday, shooter's meeting at 9:45 AM, shooting at 10:00 AM CDT
• •Stages: Five to six per match

International Defensive Pistol Association matches held monthly. Open to members and public competitors.

Additional specialized competitions for precision rifle shooters.

• •Private membership is required for general range access. Membership costs $100 initiation fee + $57 annual dues (prorated by join month). Membership year runs June–May.

Membership Requirements: - Must have a current CAGC member as sponsor (one per sponsor per year) - Valid NRA membership number required - Mandatory safety briefing at a club meeting to receive key card - All members and guests must complete waiver forms

• •Club Meetings: Monthly at 9:00 AM (next meeting February 7, 2026). Gate opens for visitors and prospective members on meeting days.

• •Guest Policy: Guests must sign a waiver before each visit. If under 19, parent/guardian must sign. Members place signed waivers in black mail boxes at the clubhouse, 100-yard, 300-yard, or shotgun ranges.

The club announced that shooters using the 300-yard rifle range should bring their own steel targets—club-supplied steel has gone missing. Self-policing and respect for shared equipment is expected.

• •New to competitive shooting? Steel Challenge is specifically mentioned as one of the best entry points into shooting sports. Matches are family-friendly, entertaining for spectators, require minimal movement, and welcome shooters of all skill levels as long as they understand and follow the four fundamental rules of gun safety.
