Colburn and Scott Outfitters runs guided hunts across Arizona and into Mexico with a straightforward philosophy: quality over quantity. When you book with them, you hunt with them—no subbing clients out to other guides.
The outfit specializes in:
Founders Darr Colburn and Jay Scott lead a guide team known for extensive pre-hunt scouting, calling ability, and physical fitness. Clients regularly mention guides like Janis Putelis as "150% hardcore" elk callers who actually listen to hunter input. Their guides have put clients on multiple Boone and Crockett and Pope and Young record book animals.
Unit 9 features 320-360" bulls, vocal elk in mornings, water-dependent herds in evenings, and limited tag pressure (100 archery tags, no concurrent cow tags). Archery hunts run September 18–October 1; muzzleloader September 11–18.
Unit 23 North offers less brutal terrain than the South side, road access, consistent 300-350" bulls, and chaotic rut action depending on the year. Base camp is a 3-bed, 2-bath house with showers, TV, beds, and wireless internet inside the unit itself. Archery September 11–24; Early rifle September 25–October 1 (limited to 15 tags each).
Unit 23 South is extremely physical terrain with low elk density—not for average hunters. But it holds big bulls (300-350" seen daily in smaller numbers). Archery September 11–24. An early rifle hunt (5 tags) was added.
Unit 10 covers vast, glassable terrain with mostly junipers, lots of bulls, few cows, and highly callable elk. Expect 320-350" bulls and intense bugling and rut activity. Archery September 9–22; Early rifle September 23–29.
"I hunted with Darr on my Arizona elk hunt and nobody could be more prepared or more professional than Darr. He was able to keep me calmed down and guided me to the biggest elk I have ever seen." — Dick Corbett, Wisconsin
Coues deer and Gould's turkey hunts in Mexico. Current bookings available for 2017–2018 season.
Recent kills include a 380" Unit 9 archery bull (Jeff Hartland), a 354" Unit 9 archery bull (Jim Fitzgerald), and multiple 370-400" bulls taken on archery and early rifle hunts across various units. The outfit maintains a record book trophy section documenting past successes.
