Full description and what we offer

Concealed AZ handles two things well: getting you legally certified to carry in Arizona, and teaching you how to actually shoot in competition. Their CCW permit classes run $49.99 and include free fingerprinting—available at multiple locations across the greater Phoenix area (North Phoenix, East Mesa, West Mesa).

But beyond the permit class, they publish solid advice on IDPA (International Defensive Pistol Association) competition. IDPA isn't target shooting—there's movement, shooting from cover, one-handed stages, and everything's timed. The math is simple: you can win matches with a $400 gun and $25 in bulk ammo. Compare that to precision rifle competitions that demand $4,000+ rigs and hand-loaded ammunition.

IDPA targets have scoring zones. Miss center mass or the head box, and you lose points. Your score = Time + Penalties + Points Down. A center hit or headshot counts as zero down. You're competing with realistic self-defense handguns—Glocks, SIGs, Smith & Wesson M&Ps, Walthers. No race guns allowed.

  • Dry-fire practice at home (30 minutes weekly with quality snap caps) improves grip and sight acquisition
  • Practice one-handed shooting—both strong and weak hand. This is where most beginners tank their scores
  • Don't reload for monthly matches—commercial 9mm ammo works fine and saves you time
  • Get a holster that actually fits—Kydex that won't release or leather that rocks on the draw will cost you points
  • Aim your shots, stay calm, be smooth—speed comes later. Precision first

IDPA is viewed as a speed sport, but shot placement wins matches. Train to hit, not just to go fast.
