Full description and what we offer
CA-IDPA Shooters hosts International Defensive Pistol Association (IDPA) matches designed to test the skills a concealed carry holder actually needs. This isn't a paper target range—it's practical shooting that demands cover usage, multiple target engagement, rapid reloading, and drawing from concealment.
IDPA matches simulate self-defense encounters. Your gun must be the kind you'd actually carry (most production handguns work; barrels over 5" don't fit the IDPA box). You need a strong-side hip holster covering the trigger guard, concealment garment, and spare magazine pouches. Minimum caliber: 9mm pistol, .38spl revolver with 4" barrel or less.
Real Talk: These aren't beginner events. The match organizers are explicit about this. You must bring advanced shooting skills. Drawing from holster, shooting on the move, reloading under pressure—these aren't taught at the range. YouTube training doesn't cut it.
New to IDPA? Attend as an observer first. Show up at 8am for the New Shooter briefing (Bay 5) to understand the rules, watch stages, and ask questions. It's free and eye-opening.
If you've shot other pistol sports (USPSA, 3-Gun) or taken a Front Sight or similar tactical course, you're in good shape. First-time gun owners will need a class first.
CA-IDPA Shooters can connect you with trainers:
Gear Checklist: - 150+ rounds minimum - 4 magazines (standard) - Strong-side hip holster (trigger guard covered) - Magazine pouch (2-magazine capacity) - Sturdy belt - Concealment garment (long shirt, jacket, or vest) - Eye and ear protection
The match runs on setup crews, Safety Officers, scoring help, and registration volunteers. Sign up for the newsletter to get match notifications with registration links and post-match recaps. Your data stays private—they won't sell it.
