Full description and what we offer

Apex Defensive Strategies specializes in live-fire instruction across California with a focus on defensive marksmanship and real-world applicability. Their curriculum spans from complete beginners to advanced shooters looking to refine tactical skills.

  • Handgun Marksmanship starts with their 8-hour Intro course covering firearm nomenclature, ammunition basics, storage, and fundamentals across .22 LR, 9mm, and .38 Special. No gun required. They also offer the California Firearm Safety test for an additional fee.

The Precision Handgun course (3-4 hours) focuses on defensive skills: tactical reloads, target transitions, and static drills to build range and defensive proficiency.

  • CCW Training includes their two-day OCSD-approved Initial CCW Course with 3-4 hours of live fire covering self-defense legality, use of force guidelines, threat identification, de-escalation, holster selection, and the psychological realities of an incident. They also run an 8-hour CCW Renewal course for permit holders and advanced CCW courses with scenarios like low-light drills, crowd management, and complex movement.
  • Rifle Instruction starts with Intro to Rifles (1 day) focused on the AR-15 platform but applicable to other semi-automatics. Half classroom, half range work covering multiple shooting positions. The Intermediate Rifle Course varies between 25-yard indoor (low light, transitions) and 100-yard outdoor (distance work), available on weekday schedules. Their Tactical Rifle (Run & Gun) course integrates rifle and handgun work with movement drills and reactive targets.

Apex doesn't require you to own firearms or ammunition for most courses—they can provide equipment if needed. Contact them at [email protected] for questions about getting started.

Instructors draw from agency drills, actual shooting incidents, and competitive stages (IDPA) to build realistic scenarios. They're willing to help students with California CCW application questions during or outside of class. Equipment flexibility—most courses allow you to bring your own gear or use theirs.

Requirements vary by course but typically include: firearm(s), appropriate ammunition (50-400 rounds depending on course), magazines, eye/ear protection, close-toed shoes, and a flashlight for advanced courses.
