Routt County Rifle Club has been serving northwestern Colorado shooters for over 80 years. Located just outside Steamboat Springs in scenic Routt County, the club operates as a private membership organization with more than 500 participating members and a working board of directors dedicated to maintaining safe, accessible shooting facilities.
The club maintains separate facilities for different shooting disciplines:
- •Rifle Range - Outdoor facility with paper targets and club-owned steel gongs. Full range setup with safety berms and proper backstop management.
- •Shotgun Range - Trap, skeet, and five-stand shooting. Automated traps available with certified operator supervision. Maximum shot size #7, lead shot only.
- •Outdoor Pistol Range - Located on the southeast edge of the property. Open sunrise to sunset, with authorized dim-light training available through 9 PM under board approval.
- •Indoor Range - Climate-controlled facility open 7 AM to 10 PM. Handles straight-walled centerfire pistols, rimfire handguns and rifles. Caliber restrictions in place for safety.
Keycard access controls entry between 6 AM and 10 PM. Outdoor ranges operate sunrise to sunset. Pistol ranges on the far southeast edge are closed Monday-Friday. The indoor range runs 7 AM to 10 PM year-round.
Annual Membership Options: - General Membership: $300/year - Senior Membership (70+): $200/year - Application Fee: $50 (non-refundable) - Pro-rating available starting September 1
New members complete an online orientation and require a reference from an existing member. Processing takes up to two weeks.
Steel Challenge Competition - Every Thursday evening at 5:30 PM through summer. This speed-shooting event is open to the public. Competitors shoot four stages with five steel targets per stage, scoring on overall time. Requires magazine-fed pistol (9MM common), at least 3 magazines, and 150+ rounds. Sign up through PractiScore.com under "YVPS Steel Challenge."
The club enforces comprehensive range rules with zero tolerance for violations:
- •Eye and ear protection mandatory at all times during shooting
- •All projectiles must stay on club property (violation = expulsion)
- •Cold range protocols during organized events—all firearms unloaded except in start box
- •No full-automatic weapons (Class 3 prohibited)
- •No alcohol or drugs on property
- •Wildlife protected—members cannot hunt predators or pests
- •Members under 18 must be supervised at all times
- •Dogs welcome but must be under control at all times

Existing members renew through the membership renewal page on the club website, even if membership has lapsed. Calendar events show which ranges are reserved and whether events are open to non-members. The club uses an online calendar system to manage range reservations and special events throughout the year.
