Competitors can choose their division based on their equipment—no need to buy new gear to start competing. Transitions between divisions are possible during a match if equipment fails.

Every SOCO match runs on a COLD RANGE with strict safety protocols:

  • •Clear designated Safe Areas for loading/unloading firearms
  • •All rifles and shotguns transported between stages with actions open and magazines removed
  • •Range Officers trained to call "Stop," "Squib," and other safety commands
  • •Standardized unloading procedures: slide locked back, chamber empty, muzzle pointed downrange
  • •Binary triggers prohibited; fully automatic fire prohibited unless match director specifies
  • •Ammunition restrictions: No steel-core, armor-piercing, tracer, or incendiary rounds; steel shot prohibited in shotgun

Matches are scored cumulatively across stages using a time-plus-penalties model:

  • •Maximum points determined by the fastest time in each division
  • •Competitors earn points as a percentage of the top time
  • •Paper targets (UML Hex, USPSA metric, IPSC classic, 3GN square) require one hit in the center or two hits in the scoring zone
  • •Steel plates must turn 45+ degrees to count as neutralized
  • •Flying clays, static steel, and flash targets require bullet strikes
  • •Misses, procedurals, and safety violations result in penalties

SOCO provides extensive educational materials for shooters and Range Officers:

  • •Rules Downloads: Complete CCO3G ruleset PDF
  • •Video Library: Stage walkthroughs and scoring explanations
  • •RO Resources: Training guides for officiating
  • •Scoring Guides: Understanding how points are calculated
  • •Article Archive: "First 3 Gun" article for newcomers
  • •Staff Signup: Volunteer opportunities to become a certified RO

Shooters can join the email list for match announcements and register for upcoming events. The club welcomes beginners and provides clear stage briefings before each course of fire. All competitors must read and acknowledge the CCO3G ruleset, which covers firearms requirements, ammunition specifications, holster safety, target engagement rules, and procedural penalties.
