DC Firearms Cooperative operates as a nonprofit mission dedicated to firearms education, training, and safe sport shooting in Washington, DC—where legal access is heavily restricted and training options are scarce.
The cooperative runs courses covering the essentials:

- •Handgun Cleaning Course - maintenance and care

- •MD Handgun Qualification License (HQL) Course - for Maryland residents

DC's firearm registration process is notoriously slow—appointments are typically booked 4 months out. The cooperative helps shooters understand the path:
1. Take certified DC safety training (their courses qualify) 2. Complete at least 2 hours of range training 3. Schedule MPD appointment at 441 4th Street, NW 4. Submit application ($75), get fingerprinted ($35), provide residency documents 5. Receive electronic permit certificate
Their stated mission includes filling the gap left by DC's lack of public shooting ranges.
DC prohibits certain firearms outright: - Sawed-off shotguns - Machine guns - Short-barreled rifles - Assault weapons - .50 BMG rifles
Carry is restricted within 1,000 feet of schools, libraries, government buildings, public transit, and other locations—with narrow exceptions for residents/workers in those zones.
Magazines cannot exceed 10 rounds. Ammunition must match a registered firearm's caliber. Non-residents transporting firearms through DC must keep them unloaded and locked in a trunk—no stops allowed.
