John Bottomley trains experienced shooters to teach NRA firearms courses. As an NRA Appointed Training Counselor and Chief Range Safety Officer, he guides candidates through the official certification pathway.
Step 1: NRA Basics of Pistol Student Course One-day prerequisite (live fire required—online courses don't qualify). Take the instructor-led version since it's the primary course you'll teach.
Step 2: Instructor Certification - BIT (Basic Instructor Training) — 6 hours. Learn NRA Code of Ethics, training disciplines, and student engagement. - Basic Pistol Instructor Course — 10 hours. Master pistol knowledge, safe handling, ammunition, shooting fundamentals, target scoring, maintenance, and range safety. Includes range requirements and accuracy standards.
You'll teach the NRA way—the gold standard in firearms instruction.
