First Coast IDPA sanctions and runs monthly competition pistol matches as part of the International Defensive Pistol Association. They've built a consistent, well-run program that draws roughly 100 shooters to each event.
Arrive by 8:15 am if you're new to IDPA—you'll need time to check in and attend the new shooters briefing before the 9:00 am briefing.
They use electronic scoring and online registration, which speeds up results and lets you sign up before arriving. With 100+ shooters showing up regularly, you know the event is well-organized and draws serious competitors across all skill levels.
The courses of fire test real-world skills: freestyle shooting, strong-hand-only and support-hand-only techniques, shooting from prone and low cover, moving without your finger on the trigger, and navigating obstacles safely. You might draw from a seated position, shoot around props, or engage targets at various distances.

A safety violation DQ is more likely if you haven't practiced safe stage execution. Show up ready to shoot safe—no shortcuts.
Matches include Marksman and Novice classes for developing shooters, up through Expert and Master divisions. First Coast also hosted the 2019 IDPA Sheepdog Compact Carry Pistol (CCP) Championship, a tier 4 national-level event presented by Walther Arms.
