Full description and what we offer
Michael Edward Gouse is a full-time master gun engraver based in Western Montana, carrying forward the traditions of history's greatest firearms artisans. At the turn of the 20th century, names like L.D. Nimschke, Gustave Young, and Cuno Helfricht defined American Scroll engraving—the gold standard of firearm embellishment. Today, Michael works in those same proven styles while offering English, Germanic Relief, Arabesque, and fully custom designs.
Michael has been the sole engraver for Gouse Freelance Firearms Engraving since day one. Every gun that leaves the shop bears his personal work and comes with a Letter of Authenticity to prove it.
Michael engraves everything:
Michael works in multiple established traditions:
American Scroll - The classic style made famous by Nimschke and Young. Flowing, elegant, timeless. Works at any coverage level—25% to full coverage.
Relief Carving - Metal outside the design is carefully removed, leaving a raised, framed element with exceptional depth and detail. Generally doubles the price of standard engraving.
Period Patterns - Based on specific historical patterns from the 1850s-1920s era. Perfect for cowboy action guns, collectibles, or faithful reproductions.
Custom Designs - Whatever you imagine. Your dog on one panel, your game bird on another. Your ranch brand as a personalized touch. The possibilities are nearly endless.

Michael is a factory engraver for High Standard, Lone Star Rifle Company, Ballard, Triple M Gun Works, and American Hunting Rifles. He's also worked with custom shops including Oglesby & Oglesby.
Beyond firearms, Michael has an extensive background in pen & ink illustration. His credits include illustrations for "Emergers & Back Country Fly Fishing in Salt Water" by noted fly fishing author Doug Swisher, and "Quack in the Saddle" by Paul Stanton.
Many customers upgrade plain hunting rifles with custom engraved floorplates, trigger guards, and grip caps. It's an affordable way to add character without breaking the bank and gives you something to brag about at hunting camp.
