Rudy Koester got his first rifle at 8, a pistol at 10, and a lathe at 12. By 16 he'd built his first 1911 in .45 ACP. After Army service as a champion marksman and M16 instructor, he started building AR-15s from parts as a hobby. In 2005, he fired a 9mm blowback AR and hated it—burnt powder in his face, unacceptable recoil. That frustration led to six years of development on a gas-operated, locked-breech AR-45 prototype. Macon Armory incorporated in 2013 and has been manufacturing precision pistol-caliber conversions ever since.
Most pistol-caliber AR conversions are blowback. The AR-45 is gas-operated direct impingement—and it's the only one like it on the market.
Key advantages: - Runs cleaner than blowback systems (no powder residue in your face) - Eliminates out-of-battery discharge risk (a real hazard with blowback) - Superior recoil control and accuracy - 90% parts commonality with standard AR-15 platforms - Reliable .45 ACP ballistics in a rifle platform
The .45 ACP cartridge offers low noise signature and controlled power—serious enough for law enforcement, but prevents over-penetration in urban environments. It's why tactical teams and home defense shooters trust it.

Direct Impingement vs. Blowback: The DI version requires some hand-fitting for quality control. Macon Armory assembles and test fires every DI upper themselves. Blowback models allow more customization if you call first.
Hand-guard compatibility: The proprietary gas system limits some options. Call before ordering custom builds—they'll work with you on what's possible.
Left-handed uppers: Available as custom jobs. Call or email to discuss.
Magazine options: Standard .45 ACP magazines, plus partnerships with Green Swamp Tactical for large-frame Glock lower receivers engineered specifically for AR-45 platforms.
