The High Lakes Outdoor Alliance is a 501(c)(3) organization dedicated to outdoor recreation in Union and surrounding counties in Iowa. Beyond the shooting range, HLOA promotes fishing, hunting, archery, field dog trials, hiking, cross-country skiing, and canoeing—with a strong emphasis on safety training for all ages.

The range sits on a scenic setting overlooking 3-Mile Lake and includes:

  • 1 skeet field
  • 5 trap houses (wireless voice release)
  • 2 outdoor pistol ranges
  • Rifle range up to 760 yards with steel targets on long-range berms

The 60' x 30' clubhouse seats 125 people and features: - Full kitchen - Modern bathrooms - Heating and air conditioning - Training and lunch room - Ample parking

  • Members get entered into an annual drawing for a free firearm when purchasing at the annual banquet (September).

HLOA hosts: - Registered ATA trap shooting tournaments - Precision rifle matches - 4-H 3-Mile Sharpshooters program - Annual Kids Fishing Tournament - Annual Banquet and fundraiser - Partnerships with Southwestern Community College Shooting Team

The range is open all daylight hours with no set closing time. Check the website and Facebook for closures during special events and registered shoots.

  • Bring your own targets for rifle/pistol (steel targets provided on long berms—no magnum rounds on steel)
  • No exploding targets, appliances, glass bottles, or plastic CDs
  • Vehicles allowed to set targets if ground is dry
  • Pick up after yourself—HLOA asks shooters to leave the range better than they found it
  • Ammunition available: 12 or 20 ga shells ($9 members, $10 non-members)

HLOA works with local Boy & Girl Scout groups on habitat projects and participates in the Three-Mile Lake Restoration initiative. All membership proceeds support facility improvements and outdoor recreation projects.
