Own Kansas Carry Concealed?

Full description and what we offer
Patrick Stevenson has been teaching Kansas concealed carry and NRA gun safety instruction for years. His classes meet all requirements set by the Kansas Attorney General's Office for obtaining a carry permit.
This isn't about becoming a target shooter. The curriculum focuses on decision-making, awareness, and responsibility:
1. Introductory safety briefing 2. Basic handgun introduction, safe handling, and storage 3. Firearm care and maintenance 4. Legal issues surrounding deadly force 5. Use of deadly force and confrontation preparedness 6. Firearm manipulation, marksmanship, and practice techniques 7. Written test (25 questions, self-corrected to 100%) 8. Range qualification
You need 18 hits on the approved target to pass:
| Distance | Rounds | Grip |
|---|---|---|
| 3 yards | 5 | One-handed |
| 7 yards | 10 | Two-handed |
| 10 yards | 10 | Two-handed |
Stevenson stands next to you coaching. Even first-time shooters pass consistently—he's not there to embarrass you. He wants you to succeed.
After you complete the class, obtaining your Kansas permit is now FREE (as of July 1, 2023). This saves you $116 in Attorney General's Office fees and background check costs that used to apply.
Don't have a handgun? Stevenson provides a .22 semi-automatic for qualifying (just bring .22 Long Rifle ammo). He actually recommends taking the class first, then deciding which gun to purchase after seeing options.
You can qualify with a .22 to save money. You don't need to qualify with the handgun you'll actually carry.
These are NOT allowed in class: - Single action revolvers (cowboy style) - Reloaded ammunition - Muzzle loader handguns - Ammunition or handguns in the classroom itself
All firearms and magazines must be completely unloaded before stepping on the range. Stevenson takes safety seriously and expects students to do the same.
Classes are held on Saturdays in Emporia and the surrounding area:
Location is announced a few days before class, depending on enrollment.
The scheduled dates don't fit your calendar? Stevenson teaches private classes for groups, organizations, churches, or coworkers. He'll adjust his schedule—Friday evening + Saturday morning, split weeknight sessions, or whatever works. By profession he's a teacher with summers off, so if you work a crazy schedule, call during summer months.
For groups over 50 miles away, discuss requirements. Call or text: 620-412-3977
"The class was informative as well as being interesting and professional. As a woman, I never felt uncomfortable and was pleasantly surprised at how much I enjoyed it. Pat did a great job of presenting the information in a straight forward manner." — Elizabeth Young, Americus, KS
"My wife was VERY nervous about the process. She hates guns and is inexperienced in handling and firing. She was made very comfortable by Patrick's attitude during the class and his personal attention on the shooting range." — Bob Norris, Tonganoxie, KS
"Patrick Stevenson's instruction for concealed carry is a must for anyone who owns, or plans to own a handgun. Patrick has years of experience and utilizes it to help his students understand how to make good, safe decisions." — Jeff McCullough, Pastor, Cherryvale, KS
You must be at least 17.5 years old to receive a certificate of completion. You can't apply for the permit until you turn 18. There's no rush—your certificate never expires.
No need to fill out forms or pay in advance. Simply call or text 620-412-3977 to enroll. Payment happens on class day. Last-minute cancellations? No problem—just call before 9:00 AM the day of class. Last-minute additions? That works too.
Gift certificates available. Call Stevenson to arrange; he accepts credit cards now.
This class teaches what it means to carry a handgun responsibly—not just how to shoot. You learn Kansas law, self-defense considerations, and decision-making in realistic scenarios. Even if you never actually carry, the legal knowledge and safety foundation are valuable for anyone who owns a firearm.
