Full description and what we offer

MassGunOwnership.com was built specifically to help people navigate Massachusetts' complex firearms regulations and get their first training in gun safety. Jim Finnerty, the founder and lead instructor, holds State Police and NRA certifications and has spent more than two decades teaching firearms safety and legal compliance.

Finnerty is Director-At-Large of the Gun Owners' Action League (GOAL) and Vice President of the Shirley Rod and Gun Club. He's also a federally licensed firearms manufacturer and Massachusetts state licensed dealer and gunsmith—so when he talks about what's legal and what isn't in this state, he's speaking from real regulatory experience.

The core LTC/FID class runs 9:30 AM to 2:30 PM on weekends or 5:30 PM to 10:30 PM on weeknights. Cost is $150 per attendee. No live fire in this class, but you'll handle multiple handguns, rifles, and shotguns to understand the fundamentals.

Each attendee receives: - Official Massachusetts Basic Firearms Safety Certificate (required by M.G.L. Chapter 140 § 131P) - NRA Home Firearm Safety Handbook - Massachusetts Gun Law Reference booklet from GOAL - Sample Massachusetts Firearms License application - NRA Certificate of Completion

"I knew nothing about guns coming into the class. Now I feel secure that I can safely operate a firearm." — Dan W. from Townsend

  • Phone: 978-486-8080 or 617-320-8012 (Jim Finnerty, mobile)

Easy access from I-495 Exit 31. The classroom is on the second floor—detailed directions and a walkthrough video are provided on their website.

Massachusetts firearms law is notoriously complex. The permit application process confuses most new owners, and regulations on what you can legally own have changed multiple times. Finnerty specializes in getting people through this maze without costly mistakes.

Bring a Friend Free - When you enroll in the firearms safety class, you can bring a guest at no cost. Your guest gets a full day of expert instruction but won't receive the certificate or course materials (though they can pay to get those after the class).

  • "The pace of the course was perfect. The instructor was very knowledgeable and entertaining." — Jay T., Lunenburg
  • "Jim is very patient and knowledgeable, and also pretty easy on the eyes." — C.S., Townsend
  • "Jim clearly loves what he does. His passion comes through in his teaching. This class was very informative; he is an expert and extremely professional." — G.A., Haverfield
  • "I picked up a TON of new information. I would recommend this class for anyone." — Rob G., North Andover

If you've moved to Massachusetts from another state and need a firearms safety certificate to apply for your permit, this is the class. Finnerty walks through the specific requirements and what you need to do once you arrive in the state—especially important because some firearms legal in your old state are banned here.

Minimum age is 14 (anyone under 18 must be accompanied by a parent). No prerequisites, but federal and state disqualifiers exist that could prevent permit approval, which Finnerty reviews before enrollment.

Cancel 4+ days before class: full refund or reschedule. Cancel within 4 days or no-show: forfeited tuition.

Beyond classes, MassGunOwnership.com handles firearm transfers and laser engraving. The operation also runs an affiliate site, MassReloading, for ammunition reloading education.
