Full description and what we offer
Shope Arms fills a specific gap in the military reenacting community: proper flintlock maintenance and repair using authentic 18th-century methods. Joshua Shope started as a traveling armorer after apprenticing under a master gunsmith and realizing that many reenactors were relying on modern cleaning techniques that didn't match the period.
Joshua operates as both a traveling armorer and educator:
| Workshop | Focus |
|---|---|
| Brick Dust and Olive Oil | Tools and techniques for musket maintenance |
| Tumblers, Sears, and Springs | Armorer duties and skills for reenacting units |
| The 18th Century Sportsman | Historical hunting and angling methods |
What began as an interest in flintlocks grew into a full gunsmithing practice. After formal apprenticeship and equipped with nothing more than a journeyman's toolbox and deep knowledge of historical methods, Joshua identified that reenactors needed someone who understood both the mechanics and the history. His mission is to encourage authentic gunsmithing techniques across military reenacting units wherever they operate.
The goal is to replace modern shortcuts with appropriate historical methods and tools.
