Full description and what we offer

Learning Firearms operates out of Brainerd, Minnesota with a simple philosophy: "Training that is worth your money, but more importantly worth your time." That's not marketing fluff—they back every course with a 100% satisfaction guarantee. If you leave thinking it was a waste of time, you get your tuition refunded.

All instructors are active full-time licensed peace officers with real-world experience in patrol, field training, tactical teams, investigations, and specialized assignments. They teach what they actually do—not what they read in a manual. Many hold factory certifications from leading equipment manufacturers and have completed hundreds of hours of continuing development training.

  • Foundational to advanced pistol skills
  • Drawing from duty and concealed holsters
  • Precision work at distance and close quarters
  • RDS (Red Dot Sight) equipped pistol instruction
  • Moving Carbine (2-day) — Developed after reviewing real officer-involved shootings and competition arena techniques. Focuses on moving efficiently with an AR-15 and engaging moving targets.
  • Up Close Carbine (2-day) — Close-proximity shooting and indoor rifle work. Useful whether you're competing or carrying a patrol rifle.
  • Patrol Rifle Marksman (2-day) — Long-range accuracy out to 400+ yards using low-power variable optics. Covers marksmanship fundamentals, ballistics, and positional shooting.
  • Law Enforcement Firearms Instructor (5-day) — Train-the-trainer course that prepares instructors to develop, document, and teach handgun and patrol rifle courses within their agencies.
  • RDS Handgun Instructor (3-day) — Specialized course for instructors training officers on red dot equipped handguns.

Learning Firearms doesn't try to be everything. They focus on what they can teach best.

Specialty areas for departments and agencies: - Firearms (covering all POST Board learning objectives) - Firearms maintenance and armorer training - Use of Force instruction (POST Board standards) - Patrol tactics with scenario-based training - Firearms and Use of Force documentation - HR218 qualifications for retired peace officers - On-location agency training customized to department needs

Training is built on practical experience—the techniques taught are the same methods instructors apply during their shifts. Courses are detailed and thorough, engaging officer students to contribute their own experience and leave with more than they brought.

Learning Firearms' signature standards drill, developed in 2016, concludes all classes. It's not a speed sprint—it's a challenge requiring accuracy both close and at distance.

  • Pistol Version (25-yard range): 25 rounds fired from 5 distances (25, 20, 15, 10, 5 yards) with tight time standards. All shots must strike the black box.
  • Rifle Version (50-yard range): Same drill, same standards, adjusted for distance.

Students who complete the drill cleanly receive a 5x5 coin and recognition on the website. Those scoring 88%+ (22 hits) with remaining shots on paper make the 5x5 Honor Roll.

Classes combine classroom lectures with hands-on practical exercises and scenarios. The reasoning: you can't learn to shoot proficiently without actually shooting, and you can't understand why techniques work without knowing the theory behind them.

Private lessons available on all courses for students who prefer one-on-one or smaller group instruction.

Learning Firearms travels across the United States and actively recruits course hosts. If you secure a range and classroom location, handle local promotion, and manage logistics, you receive free training slots in return. The workload is manageable—targets and supplies are shipped to you.
