Train SMART

Train SMART is a firearms safety training program built by military veterans with decades of combined experience. Their leadership council includes a retired Rear Admiral, retired Lt. General, retired Major General, and multiple retired and active-duty service members from all branches.

Unlike generic online courses, Train SMART teaches the fundamentals the way the military does—with emphasis on responsibility, security, and the understanding that firearms are a last resort for self-defense, not a first option.

You pick the training level and how you want to learn:

1.5 hours | 7 sections

For people thinking about firearms ownership without the sales pitch. Covers: - Universal gun safety rules - Secure storage techniques - What to actually look for in a gun - Home protection basics - Why people own firearms today

2.5 hours | 11 sections

Builds on the buying course for new gun owners. Adds: - Federal and state gun laws (customized to your state) - Types of firearms and ammunition - Suicide prevention techniques - Secure storage specifics

8 hours | 29 sections | $100

The comprehensive course for new and experienced owners. Includes everything above plus: - De-escalation tactics - Situational awareness - Pistol marksmanship fundamentals - Clearing different firearms - Fixing malfunctions - Emergency planning

Both formats get you the same expert instruction. Live courses require your camera on and respect for other participants. No recording allowed.

Every course uses the proven SMART model:

1. Secure all guns in your home and vehicles 2. Model responsible behavior around firearms 3. Ask about unsecured guns in other homes 4. Recognize the role of guns in suicide 5. Tell your peers to be SMART

This framework, developed by Everytown for Gun Safety Support Fund, prevents unauthorized access, theft, and misuse.

You'll need: - Laptop or tablet (mobile phones not recommended) - Compatible browser (check their site for details) - Zoom account optional for live courses (you can join without one)

All course fees are final and non-refundable. But if you need to reschedule: notify Train SMART 48+ hours before your class and you get full credit for a future session (30-day limit). Cancel with less than 48 hours notice and you lose the credit.

If Train SMART cancels a course, you get credit valid for 1 year.
