Covered Bridge Sports started in 1948 as a Western Auto Store run by brothers Rip and Bob Merrill. What began as a general store supplying everyday needs evolved into a multi-department outdoor business after Rip returned from Navy service, married Norman Beardsworth's daughter Norma, and the couple took over operations.

By 1977, the original downtown Dover location couldn't contain the growing business, so they moved to their current 17 New Rochester Road location. The Western Auto affiliation ended in 2000 as the focus shifted entirely to what they do best today: boats, water sports, skiing, hunting, fishing, and trailers.

The Merrill family still runs the operation with the second generation managing departments and the third generation growing into leadership roles. Frank manages retail and boat sales; Gary oversees the service department; and the next generation is already learning the business.
