Full description and what we offer
Big Rim Outfitters is a family-owned hunting guide service based in Winston, New Mexico, specializing in guided hunts across New Mexico and West Texas. Founded in 1986, the operation is run by Bob Daugherty and his wife Jennafer, with their adult children and spouses actively involved—Morgan and Michael handle business operations and guide hunts from Winston, while Walker runs Black Range Precision Rifles in Arizona and guides between seasons, and Dusty manages the company's technology.
Elk Hunts in the Gila & Cibola National Forests
Elk hunts take place in trophy bull country on Units 16B, 17, 16C, and 21A. The region produces 400-inch bulls regularly. Big Rim offers fully equipped pack-in hunts and spike camps away from roads and other hunters. They specialize in muzzleloader hunts with custom long-range rifles built specifically for elk hunting in this terrain. Archery hunts include a full 7-day season around the bugling period, and rifle tags are available when drawn. Hunts operate out of ranch houses or wilderness camps packed in with livestock.
Mule Deer Hunts - 100% Success Rate
Mule deer hunts launch from the High 7 Ranch house, Black Hawk Gulch Camp near the Continental Divide, or spike camps in prime buck country. Hunters use ATVs to reach hunting areas, then daypack hike several miles into the Gila and Cibola National Forests. Long-range shots are common due to wide, rough canyons. Hunters can use custom long-range rifles built by Walker Daugherty. Combine with black bear hunts if NM quota allows. Season runs late October through early November with three hunt dates available: one muzzleloader hunt and two rifle hunts.
Coues Deer Hunts - Extreme Backcountry
These secretive, small bucks hide in rough country with little hunting pressure, offering good odds at record-book sized bucks. Hunts are done from the High 7 Ranch house with all-day hiking and glassing. Only 1-2 hunters per year, near 100% success. Booked for one season (second week of November) to take advantage of the rut when bigger bucks move with does. Requires top physical condition.
Antelope Hunts - 100% Success Rate
A 3-day action-packed hunt with guaranteed success. Available on private ranches or public ground with draw tags. The hunt generally occurs the last weekend of August and works for any skill level, especially long-range enthusiasts.
Black Bear Hunts
Spot-and-stalk hunts at the High 7 Ranch using ATVs and hiking to glass for bears. Chocolate-colored bears are common with occasional cinnamon, red, or blonde bears.
Exotic Hunts
Oryx hunts on White Sands Missile Range and Ibex hunts on the Florida Mountains—both within hours of the outfitter's home base. Fully guided.
Big Rim operates a 40,000-acre remote ranch in the Chinati Mountain Range for free-roaming hunts. The operation takes 20-25 aoudad hunters and 6 mule deer hunters per year across rugged canyons and rims. Over 10 years with no hunters leaving without their trophy.
Aoudad Hunts in West Texas
Free-roaming aoudad in rough canyon and rim country.
Desert Mule Deer Hunts in West Texas
Hunts for mule deer across the 40,000-acre property.
All guiding is done by family members and select friends—Bob, Jennafer, Morgan, Michael, Walker, and Jess. The company emphasizes experience, attitude, humor, and passion for success. Michael is noted as an excellent guide and carpenter/mechanic. Walker "lives and breathes hunting and guns." Camps are determined by pre-season scouting and range from ranch houses (drive to area, hunt on foot) to wilderness camps packed in with livestock. All camps maintain a clean, Christian atmosphere.
Elk and deer tags are obtained through the New Mexico draw system. Drawing odds are extremely high through the outfitter draw pool—Big Rim has achieved 100% success with all hunters drawing tags in previous years. Tags can also be purchased as landowner tags (guarantee entry but higher cost). Application deadline is typically late March each year. Multiple hunters can apply together on certain hunts—if one party member draws, both get tags.
"If you are in good physical condition and have a 'let's go get em' attitude, your odds of success are near 100%. What this means is you will more than likely have a good shot opportunity at a bull. If you miss or don't take the shot, it will be on you."
Mule deer hunts: 100% success. Coues deer hunts: near 100% success. Antelope hunts: 100% success. Aoudad hunts: 10+ years with no hunters returning empty-handed.

Big Rim requires hunters to be in top physical condition for most hunts. Expect rough terrain, steep canyons, long hikes at elevation, and challenging backcountry conditions. This is serious hunting, not a scenic tour.
