Stratton Custom Rifles (SCR) doesn't do "good enough." Every rifle that leaves the shop is purpose-built, stress-tested, and verified to perform. Located in Eckert, Colorado, SCR specializes in long-range precision rifles where attention to detail separates sub-MOA shooters from the rest.
You start with a phone call. Talk through what you're actually doing with the rifle—hunting elk at elevation, PRS competition, or long-distance shooting in general. From there, Taylor guides you through component selection based on real-world experience and testing.
The build itself takes 6-10 months depending on shop load. You'll:
1. Discuss your needs and intended use
2. Confirm specs and send a deposit for components
3. Wait while your rifle gets built, bedded, and tested
4. Receive verification photos before it ships to your FFL
5. Pay final balance once complete
- •Actions: All builds use Defiance actions (or Bat actions for specific applications). SCR treats the action as the heart of the rifle—superior ignition design, tighter tolerances, one-piece bolt, integral recoil lug, and nitride finish.
- •Barrels: SCR stocks Benchmark carbon-fiber and steel barrels. For carbon builds, Benchmark is preferred for durability and accuracy. For steel, Benchmark, Krieger, and CRB top the list. Most barrels are 4-groove (preferred over 5R). Pre-fit barrels available separately for shooters with their own actions.
- •Stocks: McMillan and Foundation are the standard.
- •McMillan A3 Adjustable (hunting favorite): Tracks beautifully under recoil, adjustable cheek hardware, solid buttstock for balance, ~2 lbs 9 oz
- •McMillan ELR Hunter: Arca rail equipped for tripod use, lighter at ~1 lb 14 oz, stackable cheek spacers
- •Foundation Centurion/Sampson (tactical): Micarta material is harmonically "dead," extremely dense, heavy, and they track consistently
- •Bottom Metal: Hawkins Precision M5 exclusively. Center-feed, simple, reliable. No BDL floor plates—too finicky.
- •Triggers: SCR uses Trigger Tech Diamond and Bix n' Andy Tac Sport Pro X. Trigger selection matters because sear placement affects timing and firing pin fall. Trigger Tech has sealed housing and detented adjustment screws. Bix n' Andy allows maximum pin fall for more firing energy and reliable ignition.
Every rifle system is verified before delivery. SCR doesn't assume performance—it proves it. This includes:
- •Bedding perfection: Critical to consistent, small groups and shot-to-shot accuracy across sessions
- •Barrel torque: 150 ft/lbs for centerfire
- •Pre-fit barrel chambering: Same process as full builds
"We don't assume performance—we verify it. From the first shot to the last, you can trust your rifle to deliver when it matters most, because we've already held it to the highest standard."

- •Suppressed rifles: If you're building a lightweight hunting rifle for suppressor use, go carbon-fiber barrel. Light steel barrels lack the rigidity to handle suppressor harmonics without point-of-impact shift. Heavier contour steel or shorter barrels solve this problem.
- •Brake vs. Suppressor: You can order with either, but they shoot differently. SCR recommends committing to one or the other. Swapping between them requires different loads and re-zeroing.
- •Barrel fluting: Available. SCR outsources this work but only flutes cut-rifled barrels (button rifling warps post-fluting).
- •Optic mounting: Yes, SCR mounts customer-supplied optics.
- •Supplied components: SCR no longer builds on customer-supplied parts. They stock preferred components and may request you order specific items shipped to their shop.
- •Bedding over chassis: SCR prefers stress-free bedded stocks over aluminum chassis every time. Proper bedding outperforms the same barreled action in a chassis. Stock materials dampen vibrations better than aluminum. If you need a folding option, SCR builds the barreled action for you to drop into your choice of chassis.
- •Direct builder contact: You deal directly with Taylor from start to finish. Not a sales desk, not a customer service team—the person who built your rifle.
- •Christian values: SCR operates on integrity and genuine care. That commitment shows in the work.
SCR maintains ready-to-ship rifles in common configurations:
