Location details and information

Kent Rod & Gun Club started in 1948 and has spent nearly eight decades as a cornerstone of the shooting sports community in Putnam County, New York. They're an NRA Gold Medal Club – meaning they meet strict standards for facility maintenance, instruction, and community involvement.

This is a membership-based shooting club. The club focuses on:

  • Trap shooting – They recently completed a major upgrade to their trap house with new clay thrower equipment
  • Firearms practice ranges – Available for members and guests
  • Sighting-in services – Hunters preparing firearms before season
  • Shooting competitions – Including their popular Annual Turkey Shoot
  • Member events – Family fishing contests, Friends & Family BBQ (August), food competitions, and seasonal activities

Annual Turkey Shoot: October event with breakfast, lunch, and shooting matches. $25/person, additional rounds $5 each. Slug guns and muzzleloaders welcome. NO rimfire.

Kent Rod & Gun Club operates as a working organization where members contribute required volunteer hours to maintain ranges, facilities, and grounds. This isn't a commercial range with paid staff – it's run by the membership. The club completed significant trap facility upgrades in 2024-2025, including new clay thrower equipment, all managed through member effort.

Beyond shooting sports, the club actively supports Putnam County causes. They've donated to local police K-9 units, support veteran organizations, and participate in community charitable efforts. The club views itself as an environmentally-focused sporting organization that prioritizes being a good neighbor.

"From the serious competitor to the casual plinker or those who just need a good facility to sight in their hunting firearms, we've had a place for everyone."

The club welcomes: - Competitive shooters - Casual range shooters ("plinkers") - Hunters preparing for season - Families (fishing contests for kids in summer) - Guests of members

The club runs seasonal events including: - Summer Fishing Contest – June start, open to member children and families - Friends & Family BBQ – August 2nd gathering with member BBQ and food competition (trophy winners) - Annual Turkey Shoot – October with breakfast, lunch, and multiple shooting categories - Work Events – Spring and summer volunteer maintenance days

The club's stated mission centers on supporting Second Amendment rights while emphasizing safe and efficient firearms handling. They promote shooting sports across all age groups and ability levels, and maintain a safe facility for practice and competition.

The club takes continuous facility upgrades seriously. Recent and ongoing projects include the trap house renovation with new clay thrower equipment. They maintain a running list of maintenance and improvement needs, with priority given to member benefit and safety.
