Full description and what we offer
Mecklenburg County Council operates two camp properties that serve as shooting sports facilities for Boy Scout units and district/council events. Each location features dedicated ranges designed for safe, supervised shooting instruction.
Located at the front of camp, the facility includes: - Three BB gun ranges (side-by-side, using Daisy Grizzly models) - Archery pavilion with two covered ranges across the main road - Catapult and slingshot activity areas - Recent donation of new slingshot target stands
This property houses multiple dedicated shooting ranges:
| Range Type | Capacity | Features |
|---|---|---|
| Rifle (50') | 8 shooters | Covered firing line, benches, lighting, ceiling fans, program area |
| Shotgun | 2 stations | Covered area, clay launchers (straight-away + challenging angles), 12-gauge pumps |
| Archery (150') | 8 archers | Genesis and longbows available, arm guards/tabs provided |
| Cowboy Action | Multiple | Old West facade, steel targets, .22 revolvers/rifles, 20-gauge shotguns |
Cowboy Action Shooting: New Boy Scouts of America program featuring three different firearms and steel targets. LED lighting added in 2017 for evening events.
All ranges provide eye and ear protection for participants who don't bring their own. The rifle and shotgun ranges feature covered program areas for safety briefings and classroom instruction before firing begins.
Camp Grimes is developing Chalk Ball (CO2 paintball markers firing chalk-filled rounds at targets), which will utilize the existing archery range. The program includes full-face mask protection and targets suspended from portable PVC frames.
Night Archery is planned for the 150-foot archery range with battery-powered lighting, expected to be available for the 2023 summer camp season.
Units may also utilize private and commercial properties for shooting sports, but the surest and usually cheapest option is at one of our camp properties.
These facilities are available for Boy Scout units, district events, and council-level summer camps. All activities operate under Boy Scouts of America shooting sports guidelines.
