Practical Defense Training exists to give people the knowledge, tools, and confidence to responsibly arm themselves and defend their loved ones. Founded by Dr. Jimmy Turner—a Marine Corps veteran who deployed with the 2nd Marine Division in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom—PDT brings real-world experience from military, law enforcement, and security work to every class.
Dr. Turner's philosophy is straightforward: all people have inherent value and should feel confident in their ability to protect their life and liberty. That belief drives three core training pillars:
1. Avoid being targeted - Learn the small steps that make you less likely to be a victim 2. Spot danger early - Recognize threats before they escalate and get away safely 3. Be prepared - Develop a survivor's mindset and the skills to stop a threat if violence occurs
Because of that commitment to accessibility, PDT offers private classes for demographics who may not feel comfortable in public settings—women's-only courses, LGBTQ+ community training, and specialized instruction for real estate agents. They also provide one-on-one private training and on-site instruction for homes and businesses.
As an Official Partner of the United States Concealed Carry Association, Practical Defense Training uses USCCA course materials combined with their own practical curriculum. Course offerings include:
Dr. Turner holds a Ph.D. from Carolina University (dissertation on emotional intelligence's impact on employee turnover in nonprofits) and is a Tennessee-certified handgun instructor. His military and law enforcement training includes:
