Location details and information

Founded in 1889 by industrialist Samuel Mather, The Country Club has shaped both Cleveland society and golf history itself. The club's original vision—a country retreat for picnics, parties, and horseback excursions—evolved into something far more significant when golf fever took hold in the mid-1890s.

One of golf's most pivotal moments happened here: member Coburn Haskell's invention of the rubber-cored golf ball, which revolutionized the game and was first tested at the club before commercial release.

The club relocated to its current Pepper Pike location in 1930, moving to a newly built facility designed by prominent Cleveland architect Philip L. Small. The 18-hole championship course was created by William Flynn, one of the era's most respected course designers (his other works include Shinnecock Hills and Merion Golf Club). In 1935, the course hosted the National Amateur Tournament.
