Safe Direction Firearms and Training was started by Howard Scheff, a US Air Force veteran with law enforcement experience, and his wife Cindy. The core belief: average citizens need quality firearms safety training, and they deserve to get it without the factory-line atmosphere of mega-range chains.
"We keep the number of students in each class small so you will receive personal attention from our certified Training Counselors, Instructors and Coaches that does not happen at many other firearm training facilities."
They offer the full NRA curriculum, both classroom-only and hands-on range instruction:
Shooting Courses - Basic Pistol Shooting — Two options: Phase II online (requires Phase I completion at nraonlinetraining.org) plus live instruction, or full Instructor-Led course in classroom + range environment. Covers single-action/double-action revolvers and semi-automatic pistols. - Basic Rifle Shooting — 14+ hours over two days. Classroom and range instruction on safe rifle handling and target shooting fundamentals. - Basic Shotgun Shooting — 10+ hours combining classroom and range work. Students learn to shoot flying clay targets safely. - Basic Personal Protection in the Home — 8 hours. Requires Basic Pistol prerequisite and demonstrated mastery of fundamentals. Focuses on self-defense law and safe home protection strategies. - Basics of Personal Protection Outside the Home — 14 hours, intensive. Prerequisites: Basic Pistol + Personal Protection in the Home. Teaches avoidance, defensive shooting skills, and responsible concealed carry.
Nevada CCW/CFP — Authorized training provider for Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department and Nevada Sheriffs and Chiefs Association - 8-hour classroom course (required for initial permit application) - Live fire qualification at range (additional requirement) - 4-hour renewal course + live fire qualification - Classes for Nevada residents and non-residents - Instructors authorized for Nevada, Utah, Arizona, and Florida CCW
Oregon CFL Course — Now offering online Oregon Concealed Firearm License training

SDFT is an NRA Training Center. They certify instructors in: - Basic Pistol, Rifle, Shotgun - Personal Protection In/Outside the Home - Home Firearm Safety - Range Safety Officer (9 hours) and Chief Range Safety Officer - Instructor courses start with 6-hour Basic Instructor Training (BIT), then 5-16 hours discipline-specific training

Thomas Mendenhall — Lead CCW Instructor. Started as student in 2014, progressed through full NRA curriculum, now leads CCW department. Has taught several hundred students. Added suicide prevention training module; volunteers with Nevada Coalition for Suicide Prevention.
Kameron (Kam) Moore — Certified NRA Instructor in Basic Pistol, Personal Protection Inside/Outside Home, Defensive Handgun. Chief Range Safety Officer. Nevada, Arizona, Florida CCW Instructor. Specializes in teaching new gun owners.
