Full description and what we offer
Oregon Firearms Instruction delivers concealed handgun license (CHL) training taught by someone who lives it. Nick Nolting isn't an instructor who used to be a cop—he's an active full-time police officer responsible for training his own department in pistols, shotguns, and patrol rifles.
Nick holds an Associate's Degree in Criminal Justice and carries these certifications:
- •Law Enforcement Academy certified firearms instructor (maintains higher proficiency than average patrol officers)
- •Nationally certified firearms instructor
- •State of Utah certified firearms instructor
- •ALERRT Active Shooter instructor (both open area and school scenarios)
Beyond certifications, Nick has trained under nationally recognized experts including Massad Ayoob (MAG 20: Armed Citizens Rules of Engagement) and Lt. Col. Dave Grossman (The Bulletproof Mind). He's completed training in tactical warrant service, advance roadside impaired driving enforcement, and narcotic interdiction.
The online course is structured to cover what matters for Oregon concealed carry:
- •Handgun safety fundamentals
- •Oregon concealed carry laws and restrictions
- •Real-world scenarios and when force is justified
- •Where you can and cannot carry
- •Consequences of carrying without your license
- •Ethical decision-making under stress
Students consistently note they learn more in this online course than in classroom courses they've taken years prior.

Completion of this course satisfies Oregon's handgun competency requirement. To get your actual concealed handgun license:
1. Apply at your county sheriff's office 2. Pay the permit fee ($65 for new application) 3. Submit fingerprints and photo 4. Pass federal background check 5. Provide proof of residency
Licenses are valid for 4 years. Once issued, your Oregon CHL allows carry in 23 states.
Even with a valid license, firearms are prohibited in:
- •Federal facilities (courthouses, airports, secured areas)
- •Posted private property where owner prohibits firearms
- •National parks (except where federal law allows)
- •Tribal lands without written tribal judge permission
- •Court buildings and courtrooms
- •Private businesses with posted restrictions
- •Critical: Carrying without your license on your person is a serious offense and can result in arrest, license seizure, and revocation.
Students appreciate the flexibility to work through material at their own pace over multiple days if needed. The course breaks content into manageable sections without sacrificing depth. Videos, articles, and real-world examples make concepts stick in ways generic online courses don't.
After completing the course, you gain access to:
- •Links to all Oregon county sheriff's offices for permit application
- •Handgunlaw.us Oregon-specific information
- •AR-15 purchase resources and Oregon community groups
- •Additional continuing education materials
Students report printing their completion certificate and having their Oregon CHL the next day. Many mention this course covers more ground than face-to-face classes, particularly on use-of-force ethics and situational decision-making.
Nick offers personal support—students have reported him calling to help with questions. The sheriff's office actively refers people to this course.
