Irwin Sportsman Association

Irwin Sportsmen's Association operates dedicated shooting ranges in Irwin, PA—about 20 minutes east of Pittsburgh. The club maintains:

• •Rifle Range: 25, 50, 100, and 200-yard targets with covered shooting benches
• •Upper Pistol Range: 7 and 25-yard targets with covered firing line positions
• •Lower Pistol Range: 20-yard target with one covered shooting bench
• •Silhouette Range: For straight-wall shells (.22, .357, .44) and clays
• •Archery Range: With hay bales for practice arrows and sand pit for broadhead arrows
• •Indoor .22 Range: In the clubhouse for year-round practice

All rifle ranges have concrete floors for prone shooting and easy shell cleanup. Straight-wall ammunition only on the pistol and silhouette ranges. All calibers permitted on the rifle range—no green tip, tracer, tin, glass, or explosive targets.

Most shoots charge a minimal fee to cover costs. Check the website calendar or newsletter for dates and details.

ISA offers Hunter-Trapper Education (HTE) classes at least once yearly, typically scheduled for October. Classes run 8:30 AM to 4:00 PM with lunch provided (hot dogs, chips, pop). This is the official Pennsylvania Game Commission hunter safety certification.

The ISA Post 228 Junior Rifle Team practices year-round in the clubhouse Monday and Tuesday evenings starting at 6:00 PM. The club received a 2024 Midway USA Foundation Range Improvement Grant for roof, chimney, and junior team space.

The club also offers Daisy BB gun instruction for ages 7 and up. The program uses match-grade Daisy 887 CO2 rifles and follows Daisy's Ten Lesson Curriculum covering: - Gun safety fundamentals - Shooting positions and technique - Sight adjustments - Target scoring

Training is $10 per tier (Entry, Intermediate, Advanced). Eye protection required. Each student receives a journal to track advancement. Parents or guardians must attend classes. The program is currently seeking certified instructors to restart.

Membership includes your spouse, significant other, and all children under 18. One paying member must accompany dependents. Kids become paying members at 18 for $30 (initiation fee waived).

Three work parties per year required. Members with fewer than three owe $20 per missing party. Work parties run April through October—Wednesday evenings (5-7 PM) and second Wednesday mornings (9-11 AM). Multiple ways to earn credit including attending general meetings (4 meetings = 1 work party), helping at the Open House, range monitoring, or selling raffle tickets.

• •No alcohol on club grounds except in the rented clubhouse and covered picnic area during private events.

• •Rifle Range: Paper targets only. Use benches that line up with your target—no cross-shooting. No shooting from parking areas. All calibers permitted. When shooters are downrange, the range flag goes at least 10 feet in front of the firing line. No tactical shooting allowed by individuals—only supervised group instruction.

• •Pistol & Silhouette Ranges: Straight-wall shells only. Pick up empty shells; place trash in burn barrels. When shooting clays, stay between center and right houses and shoot toward center-right to avoid interfering with the pistol range.

• •Archery: Practice arrows on hay bales only. Broadhead arrows on sand pit only.

• •Indoor Range: .22 caliber only. Don't shoot the red lines or above them. Don't shoot from the front room. Turn on the shooting lamp to warn others in the equipment room.

• •Officers: 2nd Thursday of each month at 7:00 PM
• •General Members: Last Thursday of each month at 7:30 PM
• •(November/December rescheduled: 2nd Thursday at 6:30 PM, Members at 7:30 PM)

• •Open House: Last Sunday in September with discounted new member registration ($60 vs. $100).
