Handgun Safety Training Corp. has been teaching firearms safety and defensive tactics for over 25 years at their location on Fredericksburg Road. They're a DPS-certified training academy with multiple instructors and a straightforward approach to civilian and professional firearms education.

If you're starting from scratch or brushing up skills, they offer:

  • Home Firearm Safety Training — $50 individual / $95 family (4 hours). Covers firearm safety basics for all ages. Can be taught in your home.
  • Basic Marksmanship Training — $55 (1.5 hours). One-on-one instruction for beginners or intermediate shooters wanting to improve fundamentals and accuracy.
  • Basic Rifle Marksmanship (AR-15) — $275 (8 hours). Covers safety, nomenclature, field stripping, maintenance, cycle of operation, and shooting fundamentals. Beginner-friendly.
  • Texas License to Carry (Handgun License) — $100 (8 hours). State-mandated course for concealed carry applications. Includes classroom, range time, notarization, and passport photos. Taught by certified instructors (Lic.# 00008593, 01511958, 01554420).
  • Defensive Handgun Tactics — $300 (11 hours total: 4 hours Day One, 7 hours Day Two). Advanced course using obstacles, 3-D targets, and multiple positions. Covers one and two-handed shooting, different stances, and close-quarters retention tactics. Requires prior training or instructor approval.

Note: HSTC provides handguns and ammunition for those who don't have their own (for training courses only, with advance notice).

They're licensed to teach professional-level courses:

  • Level III Security Officer Commission — $240 (45 hours minimum). State-mandated training covering legal authority, use of force, handcuffing, conflict resolution, defensive tactics, and firearms. Requires current employment with licensed security company.
  • Level III Renewal — $110 (6 hours). Refresher for existing commission holders.
  • Level IV Personal Protection Officer (PPO) — $340 (15 hours). Specialized protection training including OC spray and unarmed tactics.
  • Defensive Handgun Tactics — $300 (11 hours). Same advanced course available to officers with valid certifications.
  • Basic Handcuffing for Security Officers — 4 hours. Legal restraint techniques and procedures.
  • Monadnock Expandable Baton — $100 (4 hours). Nomenclature, maintenance, stance, strikes, blocks, and retention.
  • OC Spray Training — 6 hours. Hands-on training including actual exposure and decontamination drills.
  • LEOSA Qualification — 1 hour. For retired law enforcement qualifying under the Law Enforcement Officers Safety Act (HR 218).

Staff includes Jeffrey W. Jones, William D. Slater Jr., and Dr. John C. Slater, PhD, plus adjunct instructors and admin support led by Katelyn M. Gillespie.

Course requirements vary:

  • Basic Marksmanship: .38 cal or higher handgun, 100+ rounds
  • AR-15 course: AR-15 semi-auto, sling, spare mags, 500 rounds
  • License to Carry: .32 cal or higher handgun, 50 rounds
  • Defensive Handgun Tactics: Concealed carry handgun, spare mags, holster, 400 rounds minimum
  • Security courses: Duty gear as specified (handgun, holster, handcuffs, baton, etc.)

Pro tip: If you don't own a handgun yet, call ahead and they'll provide one for training (courses only, not available for defensive tactics).
