Full description and what we offer
For about a decade, Jefferson County residents had nowhere local to buy firearms. They could grab ammo at Henery Hardware or Olympic Equipment Rental, and there's a skilled gunsmith at Armspro, but an actual gun shop? That meant driving to Sequim, Port Angeles, or Silverdale. In November 2019, Travis Stoken opened Stoken Arms and Outdoors at 40A Seton Rd in Port Townsend and filled that gap.
Stoken had been working at a firearms dealer in another county when he noticed how many customers were making the trip from Jefferson County. He saw an opportunity and moved to where the need was real. With just a roadside sign and word-of-mouth, he's already sold roughly 100 firearms—about half new, half used—and built a steady customer base from local military facilities, the mill, and the shipyard.
Ammunition & Gear: - Wide variety of ammunition - Hearing protection - Gun cleaning supplies - Targets, slings, holsters - Outdoor supplies (camping gear, bear spray, clothing) - Military surplus items - Plans to add fishing gear soon
Services: - Buy, sell, trade, consign firearms - $20 firearm transfers - Background checks processed in-store (instantaneous for bolt-action rifles/shotguns; 1–10 business days for handguns/semi-autos, typically 2 days in Jefferson County) - Minor firearm repairs (note: not a gunsmith, but handles adjustments and basic work) - Specialized firearm assembly tool rentals ($60 wrench? Rent it instead for a single project)
Background Check Timeline: Semi-automatic rifles are subject to Washington's 10-day mandatory waiting period. Stoken noted that most people know if they'll pass a check—deliberate failures at licensed dealers are rare.
Stoken's approach centers on long-term relationships and customer fit. He spends time understanding what each person actually needs, discusses manufacturing dates, modifications, recoil, durability, and pricing. He admits when he doesn't know an answer and works to find it. Customers bring in old firearms to trade like trading in a car—it's common to see someone exchange one or two older guns when buying new.
The store is equipped with high-tech surveillance and alarm systems. All firearms go into a bolted-down safe at night. Police response time is about two minutes, and the shop sits next to the East Jefferson County Fire and Rescue office—staffed at odd hours.
"Overall, I found Stoken Arms and Outdoors has a welcoming and educational environment, and supplies that are not available anywhere else in the county." — Beth Kennedy, local outdoors journalist and retired U.S. Forest Service wildlife biologist
